Austin's Allandale Neighborhood
Austin's Allandale is a close knit, active neighborhood east of MoPac and north of Bryker Woods. Formerly considered northwest Austin, much of the growth in recent years has made Allandale part of central Austin. Allandale is bounded by Anderson Lane on the north and by Shoal Creek at 45th Street to the south.
The Allandale Neighborhood Association has been responsible for working with Austin to have a retention pond built in 1986 to prevent flooding, having new bridges built to for flood control, working with the congressman's office to keep trains from stopping over in Allandale and noisily idling their engines for days on end, and building sewer line improvements under Shoal Creek Blvd. to protect Shoal Creek. The Allandale Neighborhood Association was also instrumental in the opening of the Yarborough Branch of the Austin Public Library. Allandale's holds an annual Fourth of July Parade and Christmastime Shoal Creek cleanup named "Candy Cane Lane."
Allandale residents relax in Beverly Sheffield Park, which contains an Olympic-size swimming pool, children's wading pool, playground, picnic areas, tennis courts and a pond. Northwest Little League park in Allandale includes several baseball fields. A large off-the-leash dog park in Allandale surrounds a water runoff area between Shoal Creek Blvd. and Great Northern.
