Downtown Austin Neighborhood

Downtown Austin is well known for its entertainments districts: Sixth Street, the Warehouse District, and Red River. They ensure that Downtown Austin is alive into the early morning hours, but Austin's nightlife is just one aspect of living downtown. Downtown Austin also has its share of parks, galleries, restaurants and shops that offer a sophisticated lifestyle.
Downtown Austin real estate is an evolving expression of new urbanism, the creation of pedestrian-friendly communities where residents can enjoy easy access to recreation, shops, cafés, galleries and nightlife. Downtown Austin residents can find almost everything they need for daily living within the boundaries of downtown: Martin Luther King Boulevard to the north, Town Lake to the south, IH-35 to the east and Lamar Boulevard to the west. There are dry cleaners, drug stores, grocery stores and gas stations. Most Downtown Austin residents access the nearby Whole Foods Market, HEB on South Congress or Central Market on 38th to stock their refrigerators. Small boutiques selling clothes, home furnishings and artwork have proliferated and the Central Design District of Downtown Austin at the intersection of Sixth Street and Lamar Boulevard is home to several popular home decor stores. Nearby Town Lake offers downtown's health-conscious pristine trails and pathways to hike, bike, jog or take a leisurely stroll after work.
Living in Downtown Austin is, of course, ideal for anyone working downtown, and given easy access to major north-south freeways MoPac (Loop 1) to the west and IH-35 on the eastern edge, commuting from downtown is viable. There is little free parking in Downtown Austin, but getting around is made easier by the free "Dillo" buses that serve the area and the city provides many sidewalk bicycle racks on major downtown streets. Downtown Austin metered parking ends past 5:30 PM on weekdays, and there is no metered parking on weekends. Downtown Austin is a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood and streets are safe at all hours. The three entertainment districts in Downtown Austin are patrolled by Austin police, on foot, on bicycles and sometimes on horseback.
