Austin's South Congress Neighborhood
Austin's South Congress is a vibrant, hip, and creative neighborhood south of Town Lake. The view of Downtown Austin from South Congress leads the eye across Town Lake and is punctuated with the Capital dome, framed by skyscrapers lining Congress Avenue. South Congress real estate includes apartments, condos, lofts, art galleries, restaurants, bars and cafes.
South Congress's boundaries run from just north of Town Lake to Oltorf in the south, then west to South First and along the eastern edge of South Congress. It is sandwiched between two of Austin's unique neighborhoods, Travis Heights to the east and Bouldin Creek and Barton Hills to the west. Real Estate owners enjoy South Congress's unique neighborhood grocery, Farm-to-Market and an HEB at the corner of Congress and Oltorf.
On the southern and western edges of South Congress, particularly along South First are businesses that reflect the Hispanic influence in many of South Austin's neighborhoods. Mexican grocery stores, bakeries and family restaurants attract residents of South Congress. The El Presidente taco and tamale plate at Guero's is named in honor of President Bill Clinton who occasionally stops in at the popular South Congress restaurant. But South Congress is not a star-gazing neighborhood, its popularity remains because it reflects Austin's funky, artsy, "Keep Austin Weird" vibe. South Congress hosts the monthly festival Austin First Thursdays that showcases the South Austin merhcants. South Congress is also a haven for vintage clothing and antique shoppers. Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds is a popular costume shop, and Electric Ladyland is where Bob Dylan is rumored to have shopped for retro outfits. At South Congress' Allens Boots, one can also find celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger or Faith Hill buying western wear or Lucchese boots.
