Austin's Travis Heights Neighborhood
South of Town Lake and tucked between IH-35 and South Congress Avenue sits Austin's Travis Heights, one of the city's most popular addresses, especially among professionals working downtown who enjoy the quiet neighborhood just minutes from the office. Travis Heights rolls up and down a series of hills that give residents excellent views of Downtown and Town Lake. Two parks, Big Stacy and Little Stacy, have a tree-lined landscape where families can play, residents can jog or cycle, play tennis or relax along the 23 acre greenbelt in Blunn Creek. Another popular park in Travis Heights is Norwood Estate Park at Riverside Drive and IH-35 which has been designated a dog-friendly, leash free park where many Travis Heights real estate owners gather with their pets after work and on weekends.
Travis Heights is known for its high-priced real estate and its political activism, especially in local politics. Travis Heights has been engaged in the battle over developmentĀ of "McMansions" which are slowly replacing the old 1920s bungalows. Travis Heights was initially developed in the 1880s when a few mansions were built, but when a stone bridge was finally completed across the Colorado River, developers turned to smaller homes. Real estate built during the 1920s with their carriage houses and detached garages have been turned into much sought-after apartments.
Travis Heights' proximity to Downtown is just one of the neighborhood's main attractions. The rejuvenation of South Congress with its hip cafes and shops within walking distance have added even more to the popularity of Travis Heights and the values of real estate in the area.
