Austin Public Parks and Lakes

Austin public parks are lakes are beautiful and so much fun. One of the best things about Austin is that there are countless places to go if you want to enjoy the outdoors. From Lake Austin to Lake Travis, and Zilker Park to Barton Creek Greenbelt, those who enjoy the outdoors will soon find it's a challenging task to take advantage of everything Austin public parks and lakes have to offer.

Lake Austin

Lake Austin is a popular destination for everything from dining to boating. It exists because of the Colorado River — Lake Austin is actually a reservoir that generates electricity and helps control flooding. But that doesn't mean Lake Austin is lacking in activities. Since so many fish are in Lake Austin — catfish and sunfish, for example — many people spend the day fishing. You can even climb the stairs to the top of nearby Mount Bonnell to get a great view of Lake Austin and the city of Austin.

Lake Travis

Lake Travis is on the west side of Austin and is home to fabulous homes, marinas, boating and restaurants. Over 63 miles long, Lake Travis also has about 270 miles of shoreline, which is perfect for picnicking, fishing or just enjoying nice weather. Really, options for fun at Lake Travis are endless. For the kids, there's Volente Beach Water Park, while adults might enjoy a romantic dinner at The Oasis, a restaurant with an incredible deck that overlooks Lake Travis. People travel from all over to the country to enjoy Lake Travis in the summer, and it's easy to see why.

Zilker Park

Zilker Park is great for running, people-watching, volleyball and playing team sports. Zilker Park is also home to a miniature train, picnic areas and hike-and-bike trails. And because of its location near Town Lake, Zilker Park is perfect for canoeing and kayaking. Nature lovers will love the Zilker Botanical Gardens as well as the Austin Nature and Science Center. Art hounds, on the other hand, might enjoy Zilker Park's Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum, which holds work by sculptor Charles Umlauf. In December, Zilker Park hosts an Austin tradition: The Trail of Lights and the Zilker Tree. Zilker Park is transformed into a display of extravagant light displays themed around the holiday season, and a moonlight tower in Zilker Park is decorated with lights. Great for the entire family, Zilker Park really has a lot to offer Austin residents.

Leash-Free Dog Parks

If you have a dog, Austin offers 12 leash-free dog parks to which you can bring your dog. These are special areas, since Austin requires dogs be on a leash that's no longer than six feet if they're not in one of these parks. Still, the city requires that dog owners be in control of their dogs and clean up after them. The leash-free dog parks in Austin are more than just a fantastic place to enjoy Austin with your dog — they can also be the perfect way to socialize and meet fellow dog owners.
