Austin's Sixth Street

Sixth Street in Austin, Texas

People all over the world have heard of Sixth Street, Austin's most famous attraction. Bars, restaurants, clubs and shops line Sixth Street, and there's never a shortage of entertainment. Sixth Street has been an Austin gem for decades, and it's also one of the reasons why Austin is known as the Live Music Capital of the World.

Sixth Street Bars

Sixth Street in Austin might be best known for its bars. But that's not the only reason to visit Sixth Street. Even those who aren't up for bar hopping will enjoy what Sixth Street has to offer, especially the opportunities for people-watching. Since Sixth Street attracts so many different kinds of people, just taking a walk up and down the street will definitely let you see some interesting stuff.

Sixth Street Entertainment

Besides bars and people-watching, people go to Sixth Street to see shows. Esther's Follies is a venue at the corner of Sixth Street and Red River that has sketch comedy shows on weekends that are always very well done. Next door to Esther's Follies, also on Sixth Street, is the Velveeta Room, a stand-up comedy venue that also has shows at various times on weekends. Coming to Sixth Street in late summer is the Alamo Drafthouse, a nationally recognized movie theater that serves food and drinks during shows.

Sixth Street Restaurants

Sixth Street restaurants include the Old Pecan St Cafe, a restaurant whose name is inspired by Sixth Street's former name, Pecan Street. Sixth Street restaurants that won't break the bank and have fast service are pizza places like Roppolo's and vendor carts that serve everything from fajitas to bratwurst. Fans of Tex-Mex will enjoy Iron Cactus, which has a great upstairs patio and a moderately priced menu.

Festivals on Sixth Street

The most popular festival on Sixth Street is probably South by Southwest, a music, film and interactive festival that happens every year in March. Sixth Street is blocked off for the festival — along with many other areas downtown — to accommodate the thousands of out-of-town visitors who fly in from all over the world to attend. Other notable festivals on Sixth Street are the Republic of Texas Bikers Rally and The Pecan Street Festival. Halloween is another time when Sixth Street shines — thousands of people in costume walk up and down Sixth Street on Halloween night as others just come to see the costumes.
