Keep Austin Weird is an encompassing ideal adopted by Austinites to describe the Austin lifestyle, attitude and political awareness. Keep Austin Weird describes the uniqueness found in many Austin neighborhoods such as Bouldin Creek, South Congress, Travis Heights and 78704. Keep Austin Weird also describes the places and activities enjoyed by Austin residents such as Austin City Limits Festival (ACL Fest ), Sixth Street, First Thursdays, ROT Biker Rally, Bob Marley Festival, South by Southwest (SWSX) and Town Lake. Many of today's celebrities have embraced the Keep Austin Weird mantra and adopted Austin as their hometown such as Lance Armstrong, Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, Dennis Quaid, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and others. The legend behind Keep Austin Weird claims that a librarian at Austin Community College coined the phrase in a phone call to a local radio station. Ironically, Keep Austin Weird was later trademarked and commercialized for use on T-shirts, hats, and mugs by a local company (but we'll forgive them for this).
